Rough Septarian
Septarian formed during the Cretaceous Period, around 50 to 70 million years ago. Volcanic eruptions killed smaller sea life which sank to the sea floor and started to decompose. The minerals in the shells and carcasses attracted sediments which collected around the carcasses and formed nodules or mud balls. When the ocean receded, the mud balls dried out and began to shrink and crack and as they did, they had the tendency to create a distinctive pattern of 7 points in every direction. The name Septarian comes from the Latin word "septum" meaning seven, or “saeptum” which means a wall or enclosure. Septarian is made of Calcite, which makes up the yellow centers and Aragonite which are the brown lines, and Limestone that is the outer grey rock. Some have white, which is made of barite.
